Suffolk Foundation Press Release
April 13, 2010
THE SUFFOLK FOUNDATION RECEIVES $275,000 FROM THE ESTATE OF MRS. ANN GODWIN MOORE.
Bequests are vital to ongoing work at any community foundation as well as its continued development. Mrs. Ann Godwin Moore, was a Suffolk resident, born on October 12, 1929 to Bernard and Ethel Godwin of Chuckatuck. She later married W. C. (Billy) Moore and had two children, Bill and Ann. After battling cancer for several years, she passed away September, 2009. During her illness, she often thought of the many needs of others and hoped, that in some small way, her estate could be used to benefit those in need in and around the City of Suffolk. For this reason, she left her estate valued at over $275,000 to the Suffolk Foundation. The yearly proceeds from this unrestricted, perpetual gift will be used to assist in the funding of grants to 501 (c) (3) non-profit organizations to support the citizens in the City of Suffolk and the surrounding area.
During the past two years, the Suffolk Foundation has awarded over $85,000 in local grants through its annual grant cycle, which is funded by the profits from invested unrestricted funds. In 2008 and 2009, the Suffolk Foundation awarded over $190,000 each year in disaster/tornado relief, donor-advised, and annual grants to non-profit agencies. Currently, the Foundation has assets totaling over $2.75 million.
The Foundation is humbled by Mrs. Moore’s unrestricted gift, which is the Foundation’s first bequest. Unrestricted funds, perhaps the most important of all foundation assets, are appropriate for donors who want their charitable giving to accomplish the most for the quality of life for Suffolk citizens but also recognize that the community needs may change over time. Anyone wishing to “Build a Better Community Through Charitable Giving” may contact Mr. William Hill, Suffolk Foundation’s Executive Director (757- 923 – 9090). There are numerous funding opportunities available with the Suffolk Foundation which will allow you to accomplish your charitable giving goals. Mrs. Moore was able to do so through her bequest, which was used to establish the Ann Godwin Moore Unrestricted Fund.
IF YOU NEED FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT WILLIAM HILL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BY EITHER EMAIL bhill@suffolkfoundation.org or call 923 – 9090. THE SUFFOLK FOUNDATION THANKS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.
